Do I always link from my blog to my site or not?

Posted May 13th, 2009 by Brian Rogers

I've heard some people say every blog post should link to another piece of content on my site.  These internal links can help me improve my rank.

I've also heard that you should only link to your site once every so often as a blog that continually links to a business site can be seen as spammy and a sales tool which will kill any momentum.

So, which is it?

I'm a believer in the 7 to 1

I'm a believer in the 7 to 1 rule on Twitter. You post things for others 7 times, 1 for yourself. Probably translates nicely to blogs.

Edit: Don't mean this super literally, just a general guide.

Balance

I think it's a balance. It is definitely good to link from your blog to your main site. Not only will it drive traffic to your main site, but if your blog starts to get copied to other sites, it with then continue to include the link back to your site. (Suprisingly this happens often enough that it is something to consider.)

To ensure that your blog is not seen too spammy make sure the content is about more than your product and company. Write content that is relevant to your customers needs and interests. Then if there are links to other resources on your site, no one will mind because they will be of interest to the people reading the blog.

Best of luck!

Be natural

Though this may be vague, I'd say just do what feels natural. Links are about providing more information or references on a particular topic. So, when it makes sense to provide additional information, link back to a page (could be on your website) that does just that. As far as seeming spammy to Google, as long as you're linking back in a normal, natural way, you should be all set. Google is only looking for people trying to game the system.

It is important to remember - as Karen was saying - that your blog is a place for interesting and valuable content (read: it's not a place to talk about your company and your products). So, opportunities to link back to your site may not be that common. Remember that, in addition to search engines, there are humans reading your content. Links need to provide relevant and interesting information.

I agree w/ Ellie. You need to be natural.

One thing I'd add: If you are vigilant about keeping product-ish content out of your blog, it's safer to link to product stuff from the blog. The key is to mix it up -- don't JUST link to your product pages. Send people off to other valuable sites, too.
