Viral Video

Posted July 9th, 2009 by Hans

If you have someone in house who has the computer, training, know how, and sense of humour to make tasteful viral videos, would you want to use them or outsource someone else to do it?

If you do outsource, how much would you pay for five 30 second-1 minute clips?

Internal people know your company better

Internal people know your company and your products better. They may know your customers better too. Since you do not have huge production costs you can give them a chance and test their creations. In the old days of marketing this was not possible because the production would cost you a fortune and you could not afford to loose a campaign. Today production costs are going down and you can have multiple campaigns in the same time or one after another. If one does not work you just have to start the next one and learn your lesson.

Best,

Adrian

Internal people can be more authentic - I would give them a shot at doing a couple videos.

Outside people tend to be more creative and experienced, but sometimes have a hard time internalizing your brand and message.

Go for it!

Hi Hans:

I agree with Dan. If the individual has the personality and the interest, why wouldn't you give them a shot? And I would position it that way. I would indicate that I was giving them a chance to shine and see how it goes. Let them try a few scenarios and do your own critique and get feedback from your target audience or others that you trust. Sometimes people that have a lot of humor in person get all wierd in front of a camera, but I would definitely give them a chance if they are interested in doing it.

This sounds like a great opportunity to allow a potential 'budding star' into the viral video world. Has this person already expressed interest? If so, do you feel they have the energy, look, and stlyle to represent your brand? These are just a few of the questions I would be asking myself if I was in a similar situation. Here are couple of quick amatuer (non-commercial) ones that I created for the fun of it. First is The Streets of New York: Friends or Foes and next is Whistler Wipeouts!
