I am working in the B2B scientific research arena. Where would I begin to look so I know how my community is using Facebook, YouTube Channels, Twitter, Blogs, etc.?
Here are a couple of wonderful tools to get you started. To begin, you may want to check out:
Twitter Grader and click on the search tab then type in your industry. For example if you type in "b2b scientific research" the first name on the list is a guy named Jeremiah Owyang who scores 100/100 and it appears he is ranked 287 out of 2,781,279 tweeters. You'll also find a link to his blog right there on the same page. I would say he would certainly be a good guy to follow. Just keep playing around with some industry specific terms in the search box you'll surely be able to find some high quality folks and see what they're up to.
Next up is LinkedIn. Do you have a presence there? If not, it would certainly be a wise move. :) There are industry specific groups you can join on LinkedIn. Simply log in and go to groups directory tab and type in "scientific research" (or whatever) and then choose a catagory. Maybe Professional Group or Networking Group?
That should 'get the ball rolling' for you friend.
A few more suggestions

Twitter Search: search.twitter.com
Google Blog Search: www.google.com/blogsearch
Technorati: http://technorati.com/
Blog Grader: blog.grader.com/
In all of these, I would search for the keywords you're trying to rank for in Google (and your brand).
Some Great Tools
