There are two things you need to know about PageRank:

1. Google says it's essentially irrelevant since mid-2009.

2. PageRank is not real time or even accurate, being at least 3 months old.

Concentrate on the important basics: good content and back links. Evaluate your competitors to see where they are weakest and attack them there first, then build up. It takes time but it's absolutely doable.
