In my experience many of the smaller businesses I've worked with are looking to dive into social media & marketing head first without first assessing the amount of time and nuturing needed to have an effective social campaign. To answer this questions about which social media channel is better for business, it draws back to the questions of what type of business you have and what your target market is?(B2B or B2C) Facebook without a doubt is a very functional application for many different ways of maneuvering, in which LinkedIn is good but limited. I think Twitter has a plus as well, as there is much less time needed to build a strong community and maintain than most of them out there, especially for the B2C...
Our success with our clients has definitely been Twitter, with a higher conversion ratio. Not to mention at some point you hand the reins to your client and if there company consists of 5-10 people and not 200+ the majority of them do not have dedicated IT or SEO /Marketing teams in-house. Twitter enables them to easily take-over their own Social Marketing with a bit of coaching and in my opinion requires much less time & work with a well thought out plan.
We've seen great results of B2B companies using Facebook and LinkedIn and Twitter. Those are the ones with the biggest and broadest audiences for most businesses. All of them have different functionality, so while many think that LinkedIn is the #1 place to be for B2B, I'd say you need to consider what you can actually do with the site itself. Facebook is light years ahead in terms of their functionality for businesses (ways to engage with people, analytics, etc.) and LinkedIn is just trying to catch up.
All that said, it's a matter of trying out different sites and techniques and seeing which has the greatest impact on your business. Marketing requires a bit of experimentation, so feel free to start with a couple sites and have the analytics tools in place to measure your success.
In my experience, LinkedIn is way better for businesses then Facebook. Although it really depends on your objectives and targeted audience. If you're a B2B company, LinkedIn is way better for you then Facebook while some B2C companies might find Facebook much more effective.
It depends on your business!
