Video Podcasting Success Metrics

Posted September 2nd, 2009 by prisch

We're a B2B tech company that has just started out in video with a weekly video podcast series (we're huge fans of HubspotTV!).  We're posting the videos to our web site and syndicating via TubeMogul to sites like YouTube, Metacafe, etc.

We're going to test this as a content delivery medium til the end of the year. While we're building a modest following, we want to develop success criteria to justify further spend.

Currently, I can track the number of views from the video sites, the number of clicks to the content when I promote via Twitter and Facebook, the number of times the web pages where the videos are hosted have been viewed, and the referring traffic to our web site from the video sites.  I have a blindspot in that we are unable to attach a persistent origin code to the video URLs to track what people do who come to our web site from the video sites.

What makes for a successful video podcasting series?  I'd love to hear what others use as their success metrics.

Many thanks,

Pam

Hi there,

As a HubSpot TV producer, we generally judge the success of a particular episode by the number of views it gets in:

1) itunes (through blip.tv)
2) blog post views (through the blip.tv embedded player, we post it on our blog too)
3) How many live viewes (on livestream.com)

HubSpot TV now has about 1500 vies per episode in a week or so, but we've also been doing this for over a year. I say keep it up! You should share it with us here!

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for the encouragement!  Would love to learn a bit more about your experience:

-- Do you recall in the first few weeks of Hubspot TV about how many viewers you got?

-- Was there a tipping point where your viewers just really began to grow exponentially?  Was there something you did to make it happen?

-- Were you able to identify an increase in web site traffic from the show?  If so, how were you able to measure that?

Many thanks for your time, and please check out one of our episodes: http://www.alertlogic.com/resources/alerttv/2009-08-21.php.

Regards,

Pam
