Links, links, and more links...oh my

Posted September 5th, 2009 by Aaron

Ive started blogging.

Ive started tweeting.

I have my facebook and linkedin profiles pointing in the right direction.

Ive submitted my site to dmoz and a handful of industry directories.

I have been contributing to several industry forums and communities, in addition to several seo forums (hubspot's included)

I asked (pretty please) several other webmasters if they would be willing to link to me, whereas I write a nice article about them and return the favor from my blog.

I'm just curious if I am being as efficient as I could with my time and energy to make the most of things.  Should I be going about this in a different way?

Any help is a big help!

Many thanks!!

It seems like you are doing the basics of link building. Depending on your industry what you are doing might be enough. You also want to consider setting up company profiles on different sites. Google is paying more and more attention to one-way links lately as well. Please check out my SEO Blog for more information.

Just a couple of things you can do more:

1. Write guest posts to other blogs in your niche that have more traffic. This will give you a link from that site.

2. You can ask others to answer to some of your questions (or your customer's questions) and post the answers on your blog.

Best regards,

 UPDATE**  My page rank

UPDATE**  My page rank jumped up to 2 yesterday so i must be doing something right :)

I have researched keywords via wordtracker to see where I get the biggest bang for my buck and now am starting on building landing pages for my site to capitalize on those.

One question that I have struggled with is where to create the links.  It seems so many blogs and forums utilize "nofollow" thus making the links useless, except for traffic, which isnt what I shooting for.  Perhaps article submission and if so, where?

Summary - Where should I be targeting my link submission?

Many thanks to everyone for the advice and tips!  They are working :)

Let's get busy!

I think you are doing great.

Concentrate on creating interesting content that will attract backlinks. All of the activity you're doing are just communication channels used to publish your content, but they are useless if content is no good. ;)

I've been having decent

I've been having decent success in building backlinks to another blog that is unrelated to my marketing blog and have just implemented the same process for my marketing blog.  I have been doing article marketing and in the case of the first site, I set up a squidoo lense, a scribd account, a blogger blog and a wordpress free blogging account in addition to producing content on my primary domain. In every case I write about the same types of things and link back to resources in my own primary blog.  I am careful that each site has merit and is a useful contribution and not just a bunch of self serving garbage.  This is tedious to be sure but if your on a tight budget (and I most definitely am having lost my "day job" back in October) tedious becomes something of a way of life in the short term :-) I ranked on page one of google inside about 4 weeks where the first site is concerned but was able to find much less competetive keywords to use that also got a decent amount of traffic.  Finding keywords that don't have an insurmountable amount of competition is naturally, extremely difficult in the marketing services arena.  Even so I've managed to isolate a few keyword phrases and am seeing traffic from them - moving up the rankings in Bing & Yahoo pretty quickly but much more slowly in Google.

Also, if you can get an authority backlink it will carry you far...see if you can get a shot at a guest post on a .gov or .edu site - those tend to carry much more ranking authority with Google.  Of course it is also ideal to get a backlink from an authority site too but I think this is more difficult...seems to be at least.

Some of my methods were learned from Internet marketers and blended with what I've learned here from Hubspot.  I found that identifying keywords is only a small fragment of the SEO aspect in that the words must also have some commercial value.  If searchers are looking only for information it is much more difficult to convert them to an action that might result in revenue.  I started my journey in online marketing efforts to promote an ecommerce site I launched back in 2007.  I started looking down the line at helping others market their busines when I lost my job in the print media industry back in October.  The ecommerce site started out as a hobby but has turned into an alternate career path :-)

Finally, I've hit the social media gamut too - doing well enough on Twitter with over 2K followers but having the worst time getting my facebook page to grow and have decided it is because my personal network there isn't all that large.  I just don't want to blend my personal account with my business pursuits other than an occasional mention of something I think might have universal appeal.

I would love some suggestions on how to attract more people to my Facebook page.
