I work for a specialist B2B software development company.
I am trying to benchmark our website against similar types of companies as part of a strategy presentation to the directors. For example, how many links would a typical B2B software company have to its website?
Any suggestions on where I might find that information?

Hi Victor,
A great resource to see how your website is doing in terms of inbound links is Website Grader (http://website.grader.com). You can also use the tool to evaluate the marketing effectiveness of your competitors to compare how their sites are doing in terms of inbound link compared to yours.

Hi Pamela,
I have used Website Grader and it is a great resource. My problem is that the results varied hugely. One competitor had 47 links, another had 5,716. Clearly both of these are extremes.
I would love to know what the average is for B2B software companies in order to set a realistic target.

Create a list of competitor websites and calculate the average number of inbound links they have. The bigger the sample of competing websites the more realistic results you'll get :)
