How to build 301 re-directs?

Can anyone tell us how to build or install a 301 redirect?

For instance if you want your site widgets.com to be directed to www.widgets.com etc...

my hosting company has CPanel installed on the server and I use it for redirects. It has an icon for redirects, I choose the redirect type from a drop list (permanent 301), I enter the URL I want to be redirected and I enter the URL where I want it to be redirected. You can use wildcards if for example you want to redirect a whole subdirectory of your site.
