Closed loop reporting or closed loop marketing is measuring your marketing all the way from a visitor to a website or someone on your list through to a closed sale or new customer. The benefit is that you can more accurately measure the effectiveness of your different marketing channels, since measuring marketing campaigns based on closed sales is much more valuable than just the number of leads they produce.
Here is a video about how HubSpot's software does closed loop marketing it automatically by integrating with Salesforce.com. If you do not use Salesforce.com as your CRM, you can also manually check off which leads closed into sales and get detailed reports about which campaigns work best.
