Is it better to have one keyword phrase or several keywords for your site's meta keywords?

I remember the old AOL commericals where at the end of the commerical the business had a keyword for the watcher to search. It was one or two words at the most. I guess my question is what should the maximum number of keywords for a website or business to target?

You can have up to 10 keywords or keyword phrases per page, but optimize the page for 3-5 of the keywords/phrases. Think of keywords/key phrases on a per page basis, not a website-wide basis.
